Common Questions
What Will I Need?
Yoga doesn't require a lot of fancy equipment. If you have a yoga mat, that's great, but if not a beach towel will do for now. Find a place where you have enough room to stretch your arms and legs out when you lie down. If you have a strap, hand towel, belt, or scarf it can be helpful. A yoga block is great, but a taped-up box or large hardcover book can work in a pinch too.
You can wear any clothing that isn't too restrictive and is comfortable. Practicing in pajamas is fine if that will get you to your mat!
What If I Can't Do the Poses?
Do what you can and leave the rest for now. You may find that upon repeated practice you can do more and more. The element we often forget about in our practice is time! Give yourself time to get where you're going.
Does This Take the Place of Other Exercise?
Ideally, this will be something you do in addition to other forms of movement. When you learn the Method, you'll find that while we do movements that are physically beneficial that's not the whole story. So keep on lifting those weights and getting heart-healthy movement in too!
Will This Help Me to Lose Weight?
The shape and size of your body has nothing to do with your worth. With that said, I understand how changing body shapes can make us uncomfortable. This practice should help you both to befriend your body as it is and become more functional no matter its size or shape. Might you lose weight? It's possible, but that isn't the goal here.
How Long Until I Feel a Difference?
Give the practice several weeks at least, especially if you are new to yoga. At first, it's about understanding what you're expecting yourself to do. Once you feel more comfortable with the poses, you can really start to see things progress from there!
